Don't shy away from a verbal battle on the Internet, it is an inevitable fact in today's Global, Connected world.  In fact research has shown that a few negative reviews together with a reasonable amount of positive reviews is actually more beneficial than all positive ones.  As the old adage goes:  "You can make some of the people happy some of the time, but you can't make all of the people happy all of the time."  Most readers understand this and expect to see good reviews mixed in with a few negatives as being more representative than having all five-star ratings.
 
In fact a big trend in the field of SEO is called "Reputation Management" or presenting an accurate representation of your business image.  There is really no way to "erase" a search engine listing that appears on page one, but you can force it off page one with the proper SEO.
